Food for Thought

Food for Thought…  or (Gluten Free) Food and Thoughts.

I  blogged these pages first, but felt that they needed to become a  permanent fixture so I have included them as pages.

I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve and this is quite evident with my reflections about gluten free family experiences.

I know most coeliac disease sufferers and/or families with a coeliac sufferer will find common ground with a lot I have to say.

More importantly I hope that for those newly diagnosed, these words will help them feel not so alone.

  1. OMG ! You are the best mum in the world of …. Help My Teenager Has Coeliac Disease ! I was traveling to the Sydney gluten free expo as I was guest chef / speaker….much to my horror I needed to stop for something to eat and I received the eyes turned up in the air and that counter staff member just walked away from me and served someone else as soon as I asked if they had anything GF. This unfortunately is what us Coeliac sufferers have to deal with every day … It may be a fad to some people….BUT not for people who have no choice if they are Coeliac and will be severely ill for days after consuming gluten ! Honestly what is it going to take in order to educate these people about how serious this health issue is ?

    1. Thank you for stopping by my blog and for taking the time to write a comment. I think the distinction between gluten free for medical reasons vs gluten free for lifestyle option needs to be made clearer to cafes and restaurants. But as you no doubt are well aware, there is such a huge turn over of staff, and a cafe might be gluten free aware one month and not the next.
I think the important message is that cafe staff need to be honest and not dismissive, defensive or rude.
My gf teenager will continue to learn how to make choices when eating out and how to deal with those who are ignorant about the necessity to eat gluten free “for the rest of your life”. Enjoy the Sydney Gluten Free Expo. I have only been to one in Brisbane and it was a wonderful way to see what new products are available.
